GoBackpacking tracks my 15+ month trip around the world, including the steps I took to plan the trip, and advice for others interested in traveling abroad.

Before I left on my trip, I was a Customer Service Manager for a health insurance company, and blogged as a hobby. I still consider blogging a hobby, though as I began to earn money from advertising, it has also become a passive source of additional income.

I began blogging about my trip so I could motivate and inspire others to plan similar trips. Travel is my passion, which is why I wanted to dedicate at least a year of my life to pursuing it.

I began the blog in January 2007, so I have been going for over two years!

I receive about 250 unique visitors per day, plus 550+ RSS subscribers (and counting!).

Yes, I began earning money first through TextLinkAds.com. I later began to experience some success with Linkworth, which also sells text ads. Google AdSense and ReviewMe have been lower earners for me, while direct ad sales have been the biggest moneymaker.

If you love to travel, I think you would find GoBackpacking interesting. I have been to 20 countries on my trip so far, so the archives are full of great stories and adventures from Cambodia to Colombia.

I probably spend at least an hour or two per day writing or uploading photos. During my trip, I stopped spending time marketing and focused on writing good content.

Success does not come overnight. I wanted to learn how to be a successful blogger from the ground up, and spent much of 2007 learning how to design with WordPress, write effectively for an online audience, and get good results in the search engines. The money and readers will follow, if you really care about your subject matter and offer consistent content.
