I’m a online editor for a series of television network Web sites.
Initially, my intention was to start an Indianapolis Colts-themed sports blog, but I quickly realized that would severely limit my content, especially during the summer months. After perusing other blogs around the Net, I merely combined my interests with the best aspects of the blogs I enjoyed most and – here it is. Second-rate, yet scintillating.
About three months, if you count vacation days, extreme hangover breaks, etc.
I typically get anywhere from 700-1,100 unique visitors per day, depending on what blogs and sites link to me.
I mainly use Google Adsense, which doesn’t generate much profit because it mostly relies on the reader, who likely isn’t visiting the blog to read ads. I don’t blame them; I don’t look at the ads I see on other blogs, either. And the last thing I want to do is click on them.
Anyone who follows sports or entertainment in the slightest will likely find something of interest if they stop by once a day. And if not, they’ll likely see a link that will take them someplace that will interest them.
I usually spend around two hours a day actually blogging, but part of my “day job” involves searching the Internet for relevant links so I’ve created quite the crossover model.
It’s not pretentious, it’s not heavily researched and it’s not going to win any awards, but it’s a quick, fun read that offers a blend of content that’s more unique than most, better than the rest.
Don’t just fall in line with what everyone else is doing. The odds of becoming a blog superstar are heavily stacked against you, so just write about something that interests you. The second it starts to feel like an actual “job” is the second you should delete that blog.
