The Extrapolater turns over rocks to find out what’s behind sports. Sometimes it’s informative, sometimes it’s funny, but we always take a different angle.

I am an editor of financial publications, which involves numbers more than words. I like words, so I started a blog.

I started out writing satirical fake news, which is why my blog title starts with “The”. After a while, I noticed my sports stories got far more reaction than anything else, so I transitioned into sports-only with all of the grace of Al Roker on roller skates.

Not quite a year yet. Which seems incredible.

In the 300-400 range. I have been gaining steam very slowly over the past year. Most of my hits come in huge chunks when I get linked by a “tastemaker” blog like Deadspin, With Leather, or The Big Lead.

Someone who likes to explore the fringes of popular sports. I like to find out who the rookies are, profile mid-majors nobody has ever heard of, and make a few jokes along the way.

1-2 hours. I usually have an idea in mind and I think it into shape during the morning, then post during my lunch hour at work.

I will introduce you to the people behind the game, and tell you why you should care about something so seemingly frivolous as sports. And then I’ll make a dirty joke about it.

Write often. People won’t come back if there’s nothing to read.
Get to know other bloggers. It really does become a community, and people with similar viewpoints may be willing to collaborate with you if you have a big idea.
Find a sugar daddy. Mine is Deadspin.com – when they read one of my posts and like it, they link it, and I can count on between 1,000 and 4,000 new eyeballs on my site that day. If ten of them stick around every time, before long I’m in a new traffic bracket.
Write about what you like. Don’t start changing your style or approach just to get hits, because that is a hollow victory. You will burn out and it will all be for nothing.
Have fun. It’s blogging!
