A blog about linux, seo, google and the internet, but veering into esoteria, science and fark like humour occasionally.

php/mysql coder and linux sysadmin for http://www.harriman-house.com
and
http://books.global-investor

i started blogging in order to put my notes about linux and php/mysql online. then it expanded into a kind of online version of my bookmarks that i could access from anywhere.

started it in 2003, so its 4 years now.

if i make it to the front page of digg its in the thousands, but on average its about 500 visitors per day.

yes, its funded by a variety of sources - adsense, chitika, text-link ads auction ads, and a paypal “buy me a beer”.
adsense has always been a reliable source of income and i used to only have adsense on there - recently i expanded to other revenue sources.
auction ads has been the most successful. still waiting for someone to “buy me a beer” though.

anyone from the the linux action show crowd to the fark fanbase to the webmaster seo gang.
i try to mix things up to keep it interesting.

about 5 to 10 minutes per day on average. when i redesigned the blog to a three column format that obviously took a bit of time - about a day’s work over the weekend - but on average i don’t spend that much time on it. as the title says - its “linux notes”, so the blog posts tend to be short and snappy. nice digestible chunks. a kind of fast food blog.

because there’s always something new and different on there everyday. its not only about linux.

don’t blog anonymously. people out there like to connect to a real person. its the interaction with your readers that matters - always reply to any comment on your blog. give out your skype address. don’t be afraid of posting your email addy on your blog. interaction with your readers is crucial.
